Stay with us and visit our local Museum and sample some cider

Set in a picturesque Somerset village, Perry's Cider Mills provides the visitor with an excellent opportunity to discover some of the atmosphere of old West country life. In the 16th century thatched barn where the cider is made, there is an interesting collection of old farm tools, cider making equipment, horse harness and many other nostalgic reminders of country life. A new thatched barn is home to a collection of farm wagons and implements, and wooden barrels in which our vintage cider is matured.

You can see fascinating photographic displays of village life and farming at the turn of the century. Cider making takes place in the autumn months but the presses and cider making equipment are on view all year round together with photographic displays of the cider making process. Our cider is made from specially grown cider apples such as Dabinetts, Somerset Redsteak, Tremletts Bitter, Yarlington Mill and Kingston Black which are grown in our own orchards and local farms. The apples on arrival are tipped into a sloping receiving bay where they are washed and conveyed to the mill and ground into pulp. The pulp is laid between cider cloths and racks on a wheeled trolley and then placed in a hydraulic press. The freshly pressed juice is left to ferment naturally and mature in wooden barrels.

Available from the shop is our fine range of farmhouse ciders which can be sampled from the barrel before you buy (taste the true delight of real Somerset cider). Our traditional cider is blended from a variety of cider apples and comes in medium sweet, medium dry, and dry (the dry being like the scrumpy of olden days). Our vintage cider, which is mellow and full of flavour comes in sweet, medium and dry, is made from carefully selected varieties of apples and is the best of the years crop. Redsteak is our award winning specially bottled cider. Also available in our interesting and unusual shop are useful and inexpensive gifts. We stock country style pottery, stone cider jars, corndollies, baskets, terracotta kitchenware, country james and pickles etc. Also for sale is Somerset Royal Cider Brandy. Our garden shop has a selection of plants, wooden garden tubs, Lady Muck compost (locally made), terracotta plant pots and stone animals

Fortunately, the basic character of Somerset has not been swept away on the tide of modernisation. Today, it remains, as it has always been, a mainly agricultural county. Consequently, Somerset into the 21st century is one of the few places where the unspoiled beauties of its countryside can still be enjoyed. Today, millions visit Somerset each year to admire the expanses of Exmoor, the lovely vale of Taunton, or the surreal fascinations of the Cheddar Caves, Gough's Cave and Wookey Hole. In many ways, Somerset has the best of both the modern world and the more leisurely centuries of the past. The M5 motorway and other roads ensure easy communications with the rest of England, the National Trust preserves historic sites, yet in its southwest corner Somerset still retains the rural ambience that calms the spirit and gratifies the soul.
